Best schools in the UK

Best schools in the UK

Top schools in England and Wales

How to define a best school? For the majority of us it is something that most closely matches our requirements or where our children are in their happiest. Still, most of our readers will be looking at the academic attainment of each school individually. The academic progress is also relatively easy to measure (unlike happiness).

This article thus is based on the results each school managed to achieve in the last (2018) A level and/or International Baccalaureate exams, which are incidentally the key exams for children studying in the UK schools. Based on A levels and IB the British universities are making their decisions about accepting new students for the undergraduate studies.

Schools are listed in the order starting from the highest percentage of A* and А grades. Schools with less than 50% of А grades are usually not included.

This year, however, we decided to include some of the schools with less than 50% of A grades for those schools, that last year had much better results.

The 2019 trend was generally towards worse results when compared with 2018. The difference for some of the most academic schools in the country such as St Paul’s for Girls’, Westminster, City of London for Girls, North London Collegiate School, Wycombe Abbey and so on resulted in more than 5%.

Nonetheless, we would like to commend the schools whose results this year in comparison with 2018 were significantly better. Among those schools in state sector are King’s College London Maths School и Altrincham Grammar School for Girls; in private sector – City of London School (for boys), Hampton School, Oxford High School GDST, The Godolphin and Latymer School, St Mary’s School Ascot, South Hampstead High School, St Catherine’s School, Ruthin School.
